Introduction to the Home Economics kitchen

22nd Mar 2023

In home economics, we work hard and still have lots of fun.  The emphasis is on functional learning and gaining skills that will help with everyday life.

Pupils come from the senior school to the kitchen to bake and cook.  Following their recipe sheets, pupils bake buns, muffins, biscuits, breads and cakes. These go home to be shared with family and friends

Then, working together, pupils make a range of simple savoury dishes which they can eat at lunchtime.  By working together, pupils learn about turn taking and co-operation.

When pupils are old enough, they stay for a full day in the kitchen. This means that after lunchtime, we can begin work relevant to home economics for Level 1, Level 2 or the Leavers Programme.  This involves taking part in activities, making and watching videos and completing worksheets, all of which go into pupil folders as evidence.
